prePiano Three

prePiano Three is where note names change to real music notes. To make this huge step easier to manage, we have kept the instrument the same so that your little composer can focus on playing their first sheet music.

Practice

Playing the right notes is only half the battle. Playing them at a slow, steady tempo is where the real learning happens. Follow the tempo of the SHOW ME button closely. It is better to play slowly and correctly than quickly and irregularly.

  1. Press NEW LESSON to generate a melody.
  2. Press SHOW ME and watch the notes appear on the staff.
  3. Have the child play at a slow, steady tempo.
  4. At this level, a child should be able to play a lesson two times correctly.

This app serves two purposes: introducing note names, values, and notation, and developing the ability to hear and predict music. True ear training grows through daily practice and listening, and this app prepares the child for more advanced lessons in the future.

A word for mentors: In all my years as a touring musician, I was never once asked what a treble clef is. If something is not essential to the student's immediate progress, why burden them with it? Keep sessions focused on the notes and a slow but steady speed.

If you notice that the child is distracted, it is better to skip a lesson. When I first taught music in the 80s, I had a hard time competing with a TV show called Knight Rider. I learned then and there that Rome was not built in a day.
