While prePiano One focused on individual notes and animal symbols, prePiano Two introduces chord families. This is where the child begins to understand how music is actually built.
Chord Families
In this app, we move away from single notes and toward groups of notes that naturally belong together. The keys are color-coded to make these connections visible:
The Red Family (C Major): the notes C, E, and G.
The White Family (G7 Major): the notes B, D, F, and G.
The G note appears in both chord families. This is intentional. The G key serves as a bridge between the two, and seeing this visually helps the child understand how the two chords connect.
Built-in Music Teacher
Every time the NEW LESSON button is pressed, a unique fifteen-note melody gets written. Before playing, we recommend pressing the SHOW ME button to let the built-in music teacher play the lesson once correctly.
Mentors, please understand that some children learn by watching while other children prefer to listen. As long as the lesson is learned, either way is good.
Practice
Playing the right notes is important but to get the most from these lessons, a slow but steady speed is equally important. Feel free to use the SHOW ME button more than one time. You can also break up the 15 notes into four groups and learn each group individually before joining all 15 notes. And yes, practice makes perfect.
- Press NEW LESSON to generate a melody.
- Press SHOW ME and watch the keys animate.
- Have the child play the melody at the same slow, steady pace.
- If a melody feels too difficult, break it into groups of four notes and master each group before joining them.
Aim for two to three lessons per day, with a maximum of fifteen minutes of total screen time. Consistency is key. Ideally, a child should spend at least two weeks working through this app.
A word for mentors: Encouragement is 80% of the teaching process. Never teach, preach, or criticize. We are here to support discovery, not to enforce perfection. Be flexible. Some days are better for music than others. If the child is not engaged, it is ok to stop. Rome was not built in a day.
